The recorded odometer readings rise logically. That is a good sign, not a guarantee: also ask for invoices and the service book.

The RDW knows of no open recall. Manufacturers are not required to report every recall to the RDW. See recalls in the RDW plate check

What does the free plate check show?
| Item | What it tells you | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| First registration and first registration in the Netherlands | How old the car is and whether it was imported | An import often has a shorter Dutch history |
| Last change of owner | Since when the current owner has had the car | If a car changes hands often, ask why |
| APK expiry | Until when the car has passed its roadworthiness test | If it expires soon, allow for the test and repairs |
| Odometer verdict | Logical, not logical or no verdict | A non-logical reading may point to a wound-back odometer |
| Recall | Whether the RDW knows of an open recall | The brand dealer usually fixes this free of charge |
| Euro class and fuel | The emission class | Decides whether you may enter a low-emission zone |
| Kerb weight | The weight | Sets the amount of road tax |
| Catalogue price and gross BPM | The new price and BPM at registration | Starting point for the car’s value |
What does the odometer verdict mean?
The RDW records odometer readings, for example at servicing and the APK test, and checks whether they rise logically. A logical verdict is a good sign, not a guarantee. Not logical means a reading is lower than an earlier one or deviates strongly: ask for an explanation and proof. No verdict means there are too few readings, for example on a new or recently imported car. The NAP logo (Nationale Auto Pas) in ads refers to a logical odometer reading.
Which low-emission zones may the car enter?
For passenger cars, the Netherlands has diesel low-emission zones in Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague (Den Haag) and Utrecht. Diesels of Euro 4 or lower may not enter Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem (Arnhem since 1 June 2026). The Hague bars diesels of Euro 3 or lower. Petrol, hybrid and electric passenger cars may enter. Driving into a zone anyway costs a €130 fine.
What is not in the free check?
The RDW open data is a snapshot. For the full history you need more:
| Data | Free plate check | RDW vehicle report | Paid history reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Make, model, dates, catalogue price | yes | yes | yes |
| APK expiry | yes | yes, plus APK history with repair and advice points | usually |
| Odometer verdict | yes | yes | yes |
| All recorded odometer readings | no | yes | often |
| Number of owners | no | yes | often |
| Status, such as export or scrapping | no | yes | often |
| Damage history | no | no | sometimes, from other sources |
The RDW vehicle report is free, but only the owner or keeper can request it with DigiD. Buying a car? Ask the seller for that report. In doubt about the car’s condition? Book a pre-purchase inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Is the plate check really free?
Yes. We show the public data from the RDW open data, without an account and at no cost. Your browser fetches the data directly from the RDW; we do not store the plate.
Can I see how many owners a car has had?
Not in the open data. You do see the date of the last change of owner: since when the current owner has had the car. The number of owners is in the RDW vehicle report, which the owner can request for free with DigiD. Ask the seller for it.
What should I do about an open recall?
Have it carried out by a dealer of the brand; that is usually free. If you are buying the car, ask whether the recall has been done. Manufacturers are not required to report every recall to the RDW, so if in doubt, also ask the brand dealer.
How accurate is the road tax in the check?
It is an estimate based on the kerb weight, fuel and province, using this year’s rates. Special situations, such as a diesel without a particulate filter or a classic car, can change the amount. Work those out with the road tax calculator.
