How selling through Sell Your Car works

From licence plate to indemnity certificate, in this order. We help at every step.

    1. Step 1: Get a valuation by licence plate

Enter your plate and mileage. Using RDW data you see three prices: trade-in, dealer bid and private sale, with each step explained.

      Go to the valuation
    2. Step 2: Choose how you sell

A free listing, bids from verified dealers with a deadline and a minimum price, or an instant dealer bid. You can still switch later.

    3. Step 3: Prepare your car

Clean it, gather the service book and both keys, and take the 12 standard photos, including the odometer and any damage.

      Prepare your car for sale
    4. Step 4: List your car and receive bids

With a listing, buyers send you a message or an offer. If you ask for bids, each dealer places one sealed bid before the deadline. You get an email link to all bids and choose which bid you accept, or none. Then you and the dealer get each other’s contact details.

      List your car
    5. Step 5: Put the sale in writing

Draw up a sale contract with the plate, mileage, price, known defects and the date and time of handover. Both parties sign.

      Create a sale contract
    6. Step 6: Get paid safely

Hand over keys and papers only when the money is really in your account. A dealer pays you directly by bank transfer and never in cash from €3,000; Sell Your Car never handles the money.

    7. Step 7: Transfer ownership together at the RDW

Online with DigiD or at a licence plate counter, for €13.10. You need the registration card and the full registration code. Keep the indemnity certificate and cancel your insurance.

    FAQ about selling your car

What do I need to sell my car?

Your registration card and the full registration code (both parts, 9 digits), valid ID, the service book and both keys. If you lost the code, a new one costs €1.25; a new registration card with code costs €39.80. See lost registration code.

Who pays for the ownership transfer?

Usually the buyer. A transfer costs €13.10 in 2026, online through the RDW with DigiD or at a licence plate counter. Online you can pay with iDEAL or Wero. A dealer may add a service fee on top.

Why do I need to keep the indemnity certificate?

The indemnity certificate proves the car is no longer in your name. Fines and tax after that moment are for the new owner. You also need it to cancel your insurance. Road tax stops automatically.

Can a car dealer pay me in cash?

Not from €3,000. Since 1 January 2026, traders, including car dealers, may not pay or accept cash of €3,000 or more. Split payments count too. Between private persons it is allowed, but an instant bank transfer is safer. Read more about the cash ban.

Does selling through Sell Your Car cost money?

No. The valuation, listing, dealer bids and help with completing the sale are free for private sellers. If you accept a bid, the dealer pays you the full amount directly; we keep nothing.
