The tenaamstellingscode (registration code) belongs to your registration certificate. You need it to sell (transfer), suspend, export or scrap your car. The code has 9 digits. When you buy a car you receive it in two parts: part 1 in the email with the transfer report if you transferred online, or on the report you get at the counter, and part 2 by post with the new kentekencard. Keep both parts safe. The code is not the same as the meldcode you use for insurance.
Why it matters when buying or selling
Without the complete code, the seller cannot transfer the car. Lost it? A new code costs €1.25. With DigiD you request it online and can download it within minutes; without DigiD you can use the meldcode, and the code arrives by post. The old code then stops working. Follow our lost registration code guide.
Never share the code in advance, for example as a photo over WhatsApp: only hand it over when you do the transfer together. Unsure about a buyer? Use our scam check.
