What do you need?
- The car's registration card (kentekencard)
- DigiD (or eHerkenning if the car is registered to your company)
- iDEAL or Wero to pay
- An email address for the download link
- Without DigiD: the meldcode (last 4 digits of the VIN)
- At a desk: the registration document and valid ID
What does it cost?
Estimated cost
€1.25
RDW fee for a new registration code in 2026. A new registration card with code costs €39.80.
Total time: 10 minutes
Step 1: Work out exactly what is missing
The tenaamstellingscode (registration code, see tenaamstellingscode) has 9 digits. Part 1 is on the transfer report you received when the car was put in your name, part 2 in the letter that came with the registration card. Do not confuse it with the meldcode, the last 4 digits of the VIN. Still have an old paper registration? Then you never had a code, and losing part of it means you need a new kentekencard.
Step 2: Check that you may request the code
You can only request a new code if the car is registered to you or your company and you still have the registration card. For a lease car, only the lease or finance company can request one. Not sure the car is still in your name? Check Mijn RDW or use the licence plate check.
Step 3: Download the code with DigiD
On rdw.nl go to 'Tenaamstellingscode kwijt' and choose the download with DigiD. If the car is registered to your company, choose eHerkenning. Follow the steps and pay €1.25 with iDEAL or Wero. Within minutes you receive 2 emails: a confirmation, then one with a link to the code. You may have to log in again to download it.
Step 4: Store the new code safely
You receive all 9 digits in one go. Save the file right away: after 40 days the code can no longer be downloaded. The old code is now invalid, while your plate stays the same. If you find the old code later, the request cannot be cancelled and there is no refund. Keep the code with your other car papers, not in the car.
Step 5: No DigiD? Order the code by post
Without DigiD, or when ordering for someone else, use the meldcode, shown on the registration document and the transfer report. On rdw.nl choose 'Tenaamstellingscode aanvragen', then the code-only option, and pay with iDEAL or Wero. The RDW posts the full code to the owner's address in the BRP (Personal Records Database). Order on a weekday before 20:00 and it is posted on the 3rd working day.
Step 6: Or collect the code at a desk
Need the code the same day? Go to the RDW desk in Veendam or Zoetermeer or to an RDW inspection station. Bring the registration document and a valid ID card, passport or driving licence. For a company car, also bring a certified Chamber of Commerce (KVK) extract no older than 1 year. You leave with the registration code in hand.
Step 7: Card lost too? Order both
Lost the registration card too, or was it stolen or damaged? Order a new card with registration code on rdw.nl using your meldcode. It costs €39.80. Order on a weekday before 20:00 and the card is posted the next working day, the code within 3 working days. Then you can carry on with the ownership transfer.
Tips
- Order a new code as soon as you decide to sell, not when the buyer is at the door.
- Download the code right after the email arrives: the link works for 40 days.
- Keep the transfer report and RDW letter together in a folder at home, not in the glovebox.
- Selling to an RDW-approved dealer? Bring the card and code; the dealer handles the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a new registration code cost?
€1.25 in 2026. You pay with iDEAL or Wero when you order online. If you have also lost the registration card, a new card with registration code costs €39.80. A request cannot be undone: if you find the old code later, you do not get your money back.
How quickly will I have a new code?
Within minutes if you download it with DigiD. Without DigiD the code comes by post: order on a weekday before 20:00 and it is posted on the 3rd working day. At an RDW desk or inspection station you get the code on the spot. So order it in good time if you plan to sell.
What is the difference between the registration code and the meldcode?
They are 2 different codes. The 9-digit registration code (tenaamstellingscode) is needed to sell, suspend, export or scrap a car. The 4-digit meldcode is the last 4 digits of the VIN. You use it to take out insurance and to order a new registration code without DigiD.
Can I sell with only part 1 of the code?
No. A transfer needs the full 9-digit code. If part 2 is missing, for example because the RDW letter is lost, request a new registration code. You then receive all 9 digits at once and the old code stops working. With DigiD you have the new code within minutes.
