DigiD (Dutch government login)

Updated All terms from A to Z

DigiD (Digitale Identiteit, digital identity) is how you log in to Dutch government agencies and other organisations that are allowed to use your citizen service number (BSN). You can log in with the DigiD app, with SMS verification or with a username and password. Some services also require an ID check in the DigiD app, using your passport, identity card or driving licence.

Why it matters when buying or selling

For car matters you'll mainly use DigiD with the RDW. To transfer a car online, the buyer logs in with the DigiD app with ID check. If the buyer doesn't have that, you'll need a registration counter (kentekenloket). As an owner, you also use DigiD to download a free RDW vehicle report or to request a new registration code (tenaamstellingscode), which costs €1.25 and is ready to download within minutes.

New to the Netherlands? You need a BSN to apply for DigiD. Set up the app with ID check well before you buy or sell, so the transfer doesn't stall on the day itself. See our step-by-step transfer guide.
