What should you check when buying a used car?

People in the Netherlands bought a record 2,124,429 used passenger cars in 2025, 65.2% of them from a dealer. Petrol cars were by far the largest group at 72.7%, followed by hybrids (16.0%), diesels (5.5%) and fully electric cars (4.8%). With that much choice, it pays to search smartly.

That is why on Sell Your Car you filter not only by make, price and mileage, but also by what really matters in the Netherlands:

  • NAP and odometer: only cars with a logical RDW odometer verdict.
  • APK (MOT): valid for at least six months, so you don't need a garage straight away.
  • Low-emission zones: diesel cars with Euro 4 or lower may not enter Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem; The Hague bars Euro 3 and lower. Check any car with the low-emission zone check.
  • VAT or margin: business buyers see right away which cars show VAT separately.
  • Electric: filter by battery State of Health and WLTP range.

Every car shows whether the asking price is sharp, fair or above the market. That indication comes from our valuation model and is not an appraisal. Unsure about a price? Use the fair price check or have the car inspected first.

FAQ about buying a used car

What does “NAP logical” mean for a used car?

NAP stands for Nationale Auto Pas. The RDW records odometer readings and gives a verdict based on them: logical, not logical or no judgement. Preferably choose a car with a logical verdict. If it is not logical, ask for invoices that explain the history, or keep looking. You can check it yourself with the licence plate check.

Why does the APK date matter when buying a used car?

An APK (MOT) that expires soon means extra costs. According to the ANWB the test itself costs €19 to €70, sometimes more for diesels, plus any repairs needed to pass. With the filter “APK valid for at least 6 months” you only see cars with some margin. Note: an APK is not a pre-purchase inspection.

What is the difference between a VAT car and a margin car?

With a margin car, the dealer bought the car from a private person and only pays VAT on its margin. VAT is not shown on the invoice and cannot be reclaimed; most used cars are sold this way. A VAT car (often ex-lease) is sold with 21% VAT shown separately, which a business buyer can reclaim. Buying from a private seller means no VAT.

Should I have a used car inspected before buying?

It is wise, especially when buying privately: then you have to prove a defect already existed. According to the ANWB a pre-purchase inspection costs €150 to €350; at a BOVAG garage or brand dealer about €100 to €150. If the seller refuses an inspection, keep looking.
