FAQ about selling and buying a car

How do I sell my car quickly for a good price?

First get a free valuation by licence plate so you know three prices: trade-in, dealer bid and private sale. Then ask verified dealers for bids, with a deadline and a minimum price. Each dealer places one sealed bid, and you choose whether to accept one.

How much does a car ownership transfer cost in 2026?

A transfer costs €13.10 in 2026, online through the RDW or at a licence plate counter such as PostNL. The buyer usually pays. The seller receives a vrijwaringsbewijs (indemnity certificate) and is no longer liable from that moment. Calculate all costs.

Who bids on my car?

Only verified dealers, checked on KvK and RDW recognition. Each dealer places one sealed bid before the deadline and does not see the other bids. You choose a bid and accept it, or none. Then you and the dealer get each other’s contact details and the dealer pays you directly by bank transfer. It is free for you.

Can I pay cash for a car?

Between private persons, yes. Since 1 January 2026, traders, including car dealers, may not accept cash payments of €3,000 or more. Preferably pay by instant bank transfer and hand over the keys only once the money has arrived.

Is the valuation really free?

Yes. The valuation, the plate check, all calculators and listing your car are free for private sellers. You don’t need an account for the tools.
