What should you know when selling a Opel?

Opel is a people’s brand in the Netherlands: affordable, easy to get serviced anywhere and with plenty of parts in stock. The Corsa is the most traded used car in the country after the Polo and Golf, the Astra is a staple as an economical estate (Sports Tourer), and the Mokka and Crossland are the compact SUVs. The Karl is a sought-after small city car no longer sold new.

Since 2017 Opel has belonged to PSA and later Stellantis. Newer Opels therefore share technology with Peugeot and Citroën, such as the 1.2 turbo petrol engine with a timing belt running in oil. On older Opels (General Motors era), buyers ask about the timing belt, clutch and rust. For every Opel, a complete service book and a logical odometer record (tellerstandoordeel) are your best selling points. Start with a free valuation.

How well does a Opel hold its value?

Opels are not the strongest at holding value, but strong demand for affordable used cars means they sell quickly. Young Corsas and Astra Sports Tourers with automatics hold their value best.

What do buyers look for in a Opel?

Strengths

  • Large supply and many buyers: the Corsa is one of the most traded used cars
  • Affordable servicing and parts at any garage
  • Roomy estates (Sports Tourer) for little money
  • Newer models also electric (Corsa Electric, Mokka Electric)

What buyers check

  • 1.2 Turbo (from 2019): timing belt running in oil and oil consumption
  • Older 1.0/1.2/1.4 petrols: timing chain or belt and clutch
  • Rust around wheel arches and sills on older examples
  • Diesels: emission class and low-emission zones

Tips for the best price

  • Get an APK done if it expires within a few months; it reassures buyers
  • Put the trim (Edition, Elegance, GS Line, Ultimate) in your ad title
  • For a 1.2 Turbo, mention when the belt was checked
  • Selling privately pays thanks to strong demand; an auction works well for older Opels

FAQ about selling a Opel

Is an Opel Corsa easy to sell?

Yes. With 44,191 sales in 2025, the Corsa was the third most traded used car in the Netherlands (BOVAG/RDC). There are always buyers, from first-time drivers to families after a second car. With a fair price and a complete service book, it usually sells within a few weeks.

Is a new Opel really a Peugeot?

Partly. Opels from around 2019 (such as the Corsa F, Mokka B and Astra L) sit on Stellantis platforms and share engines with Peugeot and Citroën. Design, tuning and equipment are Opel’s own. Any Opel or Stellantis dealer can service them.

Can my old Opel diesel enter low-emission zones?

It depends on the emission class. In 2026, diesels with Euro 4 and below are barred from Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem, and Euro 3 and below from Den Haag. Many Astra H and Corsa D diesels from before 2010 are Euro 4. Check with the low-emission zone check.

What is my high-mileage Opel worth?

Less than a comparable car with average mileage, but there is still demand. An Opel with 200,000 km, a logical odometer record, a recent APK and invoices often finds a buyer looking for a cheap, reliable car. Check the value by registration number for a first indication.
