How is road tax calculated?

Motor vehicle tax (MRB) consists of a national part and the provincial surcharge (opcenten). The amount depends on three things:

  1. Weight: the mass in running order. The heavier the car, the higher the rate.
  2. Fuel: diesel and LPG pay a surcharge on top of the petrol rate. Electric cars get a discount up to and including 2029.
  3. Province: each province levies its own surcharge, so the same car does not cost the same everywhere.

You pay per quarter, as the registered keeper. Example for 2026 in Utrecht: a 1,250 kg petrol car costs €175 per quarter, a diesel of the same weight €361.

How much discount do electric cars and plug-in hybrids get?

Year Full electric Plug-in hybrid (up to 50 g/km)
2025 75% discount 25% discount
2026 30% discount no discount
2027 30% discount no discount
2028 30% discount no discount
2029 25% discount no discount
2030 no discount no discount

The discount applies to the total including the provincial surcharge, and to used electric cars too. Note: many sites still quote 25% for 2026, but it is 30%. Electric vans no longer get a discount from 2026.

What do you pay per province?

The surcharge differs per province. This is what it looks like in 2026 for an average petrol car and an electric car:

Province Surcharge rate 2026 Petrol 1,250 kg Electric 1,750 kg
Noord-Holland 82.1 €172 €214

Fryslân 92.1 €179 €223

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay road tax per month or per quarter?

Road tax is calculated per quarter and paid by the registered keeper. The calculator also shows the amount per month and per year, so you can compare it easily with other car costs.

How much road tax does an electric car pay in 2026?

A full electric car pays 70% of the normal rate for its weight in 2026, including the provincial surcharge: it gets a 30% discount. Because electric cars are often heavy, the amount can still be considerable. In 2029 the discount becomes 25% and from 2030 it ends.

Why does a diesel pay more road tax?

Diesels pay a fuel surcharge on top of the rate for petrol cars of the same weight. A diesel without a factory particulate filter also pays a particulate surcharge. Tick in the calculator whether your car has a particulate filter.

Do I get road tax back when I sell my car?

Yes. Road tax stops automatically on the day the car is registered to the buyer. You get the part you had already paid in advance back pro rata from the tax authority.
