Insurance, financing and resale value are not included. Electric cars often lose value faster in the first years; check that with the monthly cost calculator.

How do you compare the cost of electric and petrol?

Put the purchase price and the yearly running costs side by side. Running costs are energy (electricity or petrol), road tax and maintenance. Add them to the purchase price year by year and you see in which year the lines cross: that is the break-even point.

Per 100 km Electric Petrol
Example consumption 17 kWh 6 litres
Price (CBS) €0.26 per kWh, home charging €2.46 per litre
Energy cost €4.42 €14.77

How much road tax does an electric car pay?

Electric cars pay road tax based on their weight, like other cars, but with a discount. The discount applies to the total including the provincial surcharge, and to used electric cars too.

Year Discount full electric Discount plug-in hybrid
2025 75% 25%
2026 30% 0%
2027 30% 0%
2028 30% 0%
2029 25% 0%
2030 0% 0%

Note: many sites still quote a 25% discount for 2026. That is wrong: it is 30%, so you pay 70% of the normal rate. Electric cars are often heavier, so their normal rate is higher. Work it out exactly with the road tax calculator.

When does an electric car pay for itself?

The more you drive, the faster the price gap comes back. Home charging is much cheaper than fast charging. If you mostly charge on the road, enter your own average price per kWh. Also count insurance and resale value: electric cars often lose value faster in their first years. You can see that in monthly cost of ownership.

Is there a subsidy for a (used) electric car?

The SEPP subsidy is permanently closed; the last applications were possible until 27 December 2024. On 21 September 2026 the government announced a successor, the Overstapsubsidie Gebruikte Elektrische Auto’s (OGEA): €4,000, or €6,000 if you scrap a Euro 0–4 car you have owned for at least a year, for a used electric car with a catalogue price of €12,000 to €60,000. The scheme is announced but not yet open; opening is planned preferably in the fourth quarter of 2026, otherwise in the second quarter of 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2026 road tax discount for electric cars 25% or 30%?

It is 30%. A full electric car gets a 30% discount in 2026, 2027 and 2028, so it pays 70% of the normal rate for its weight, including the provincial surcharge. Many sites wrongly say 25%; that discount only applies in 2029. From 2030 there is no discount.

Do used electric cars also get the road tax discount?

Yes. The discount depends on the tax year, not on the age of the car. A used electric car therefore gets the same 30% discount in 2026 as a new one. Electric vans no longer get a discount from 2026.

Do plug-in hybrids pay less road tax?

Not any more. Plug-in hybrids emitting up to 50 g/km still had a 25% discount in 2025. From 2026 they pay the full rate for their weight and fuel.

Is home charging really that much cheaper?

At home you pay your own electricity rate. The CBS average for the variable delivery tariff plus energy tax was about €0.26 per kWh in September 2026. Public and fast chargers charge more per kWh, so enter the price that fits how you charge.
