How do you calculate fuel cost?

Multiply the distance by the consumption per kilometre and the price per litre or kWh:

cost = distance (km) × consumption (l/100 km) ÷ 100 × price per litre

Drive 250 km in a car that uses 6 litres per 100 km and you use 15 litres. At €2.46 a litre that is €36.93. Know your consumption as km per litre, say 16? Divide 100 by 16: that is 6.25 litres per 100 km. The calculator converts both ways.

What does 100 km of driving cost in 2026?

With the CBS average pump prices and an example consumption per fuel:

Fuel Price Example consumption Per 100 km Per 1,000 km
Petrol (Euro95) €2.46 per litre 6 l/100 km €14.77 €148
Diesel €2.48 per litre 5 l/100 km €12.41 €124
LPG €0.96 per litre 8 l/100 km €7.69 €77
Electric €0.26 per kWh 17 kWh/100 km €4.42 €44

The consumption is an example: enter your own car’s figure in the calculator. Real-world consumption is often higher than the official figure, especially on short trips, in the cold and at high speed.

Which price should you enter?

The CBS publishes the average pump price per day. You usually pay more on the motorway and less at unmanned stations. For electric driving the price depends on where you charge: at home you pay your own electricity rate, while public chargers and fast chargers cost more per kWh. So enter the price you actually pay.

How can you cut your fuel costs?

  • Drive smoothly and shift up early; hard acceleration and braking cost fuel.
  • Check your tyre pressure, because soft tyres raise consumption.
  • Remove unnecessary weight and an empty roof rack.
  • Fill up where it is cheap and avoid motorway stations.
  • Drive a lot? Use the EV vs petrol calculator to see what you would save per year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert km per litre to litres per 100 km?

Divide 100 by the kilometres per litre. 15 km per litre is 100 ÷ 15 = 6.7 litres per 100 km. The other way round, divide 100 by the consumption per 100 km: 5 litres per 100 km is 20 km per litre. The calculator converts this automatically.

What does electric driving cost per 100 km?

It depends on your consumption and where you charge. At 17 kWh per 100 km and home charging at the average variable rate plus energy tax of €0.26 per kWh (CBS, September 2026) you pay about €4.42 per 100 km. Public and fast chargers cost more.

How do I split the fuel cost of a shared trip?

Enter the number of people under "split the cost between", including yourself. The calculator then divides the trip cost by that number. For a return trip, tick the box so the distance is doubled.
