What should you know when selling a Renault?

In the Netherlands, Renault is the brand of practical, affordable cars that spend their lives on city streets, ring roads and school runs. The Clio carries the brand on the used market: according to BOVAG/RDC, 31,731 used Clios changed hands in 2025. The Captur, Twingo, Mégane and the electric ZOE also sell steadily, as first cars for new drivers and second cars for families.

With a used Renault, the engine matters more than with many other brands. Buyers know about oil consumption on the 1.2 TCe petrol engine from roughly 2012–2016, and they will test the EDC automatic for jerky pull-aways. A complete service history removes most of that doubt. Trims such as Intens, Techno, R.S. Line and Esprit Alpine sell better than a basic Life or Zen. Older Euro 4 dCi diesels are banned from the milieuzones (low-emission zones) in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem, so run a low-emission zone check before you set a price.

With the electric ZOE, it all comes down to the battery: is it leased or owned, and how healthy is it? A ZOE with an owned battery appeals to far more buyers. Always start with a free valuation using your kenteken (registration number), so you know where you stand before a dealer quotes a trade-in price.

How well does a Renault hold its value?

Renaults lose value a little faster in the first years than Japanese and Korean rivals, but the Clio and Captur sell quickly because demand is high. A ZOE with a leased battery is noticeably harder to sell than one with an owned battery.

What do buyers look for in a Renault?

Strengths

  • Strong demand for the Clio and Captur, so they sell quickly
  • Affordable parts and plenty of independent specialists
  • Economical E-Tech full hybrids in the Clio and Captur
  • A wide choice of affordable EVs (ZOE, Twingo Electric, Mégane E-Tech)
  • Practical touches such as the Captur's sliding rear bench

What buyers check

  • Oil consumption and timing chain on the 1.2 TCe (approx. 2012–2016)
  • EDC automatic that jerks when pulling away or in traffic
  • Euro 4 diesels are barred from the Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem low-emission zones
  • ZOE: leased or owned battery, and the battery's state of health (SoH)
  • Electrics on older models: keycard, windows and infotainment

Tips for the best price

  • Put the trim in the ad title (Intens, Techno, R.S. Line, Esprit Alpine); buyers filter on it
  • Include invoices for oil changes; on a 1.2 TCe that is your strongest argument
  • For a ZOE with a leased battery, sort out beforehand how the contract transfers or whether you can buy the battery out
  • Fix small things buyers notice straight away, such as a warning light or an air-con that needs regassing

FAQ about selling a Renault

What is my Renault worth?

You can see it instantly and for free by entering your registration number on Sell Your Car. The value mainly depends on model, year, mileage, engine and trim. With a Renault, the service history, the condition of the EDC automatic and, for a ZOE, the battery (leased or owned, state of health) also weigh heavily. Use the result as the basis for your asking price and your talks with a dealer.

Can my Renault diesel still enter low-emission zones?

Only if it is Euro 5 or newer. Euro 4 and older diesels are barred from the low-emission zones in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem (Arnhem since 1 June 2026); The Hague bars Euro 3 and older. The fine is €130. Many dCi diesels from before roughly 2010 are Euro 4. Check the emission class with the low-emission zone check and mention it in your ad.

Is a ZOE with a leased battery hard to sell?

Yes, harder than a ZOE with an owned battery. The buyer has to take out their own battery rental contract with Renault's finance arm and then pays a monthly fee. Many private buyers walk away at that point, and dealers factor it into their bid. Ask beforehand whether the contract can be transferred or the battery bought out, and state the monthly cost honestly in your ad.

Should I sell my Renault to a dealer or a private buyer?

A private sale usually brings in the most, while a dealer is faster and easier. A desirable Clio or Captur finds a private buyer quickly. For an older diesel, a car with a leased battery or overdue maintenance, a dealer bid or auction is often more practical. If you sell privately, be honest about known faults: you may not hide them.
