Who buys a used Renault ZOE?

The ZOE was one of the first affordable electric cars in the Netherlands and is now a popular entry-level EV on the used market. Buyers are commuters with a charge point at the door, families looking for an electric second car and people who mostly make short trips. Production ended in 2024, so supply is large and buyers compare closely on battery size (22, 41 or 52 kWh), charging speed and whether a CCS fast-charging port is fitted.

The key question is whether the battery is leased or owned. With a leased battery, the new owner must sign their own contract with Renault's finance arm (Mobilize Financial Services) and pay a monthly fee. Many buyers walk away at that point, so a ZOE with an owned battery sells far more easily. Ask beforehand whether you can buy the battery out. State of health (SoH) matters too: have the battery tested and read how to check battery health. In 2026 an EV pays 70% of the normal road tax rate.

Which ZOE generations are there?

Which ZOE generations are there?
GenerationWhat to know
ZOE Phase 1 (22 kWh)2013–2016Small battery, usually leased; fast AC charging but no DC fast-charging port.
ZOE Phase 1 (Z.E. 40)2017–201941 kWh battery with much more range; more often sold with an owned battery.
ZOE Phase 2 (Z.E. 50)2019–202452 kWh battery, new interior and an optional CCS port for fast charging.

Which ZOE versions are popular?

These are the versions buyers search for most. Name the exact version in your ad.

  • Renault ZOE R110 Z.E. 50
  • Renault ZOE R135 Z.E. 50
  • Renault ZOE R90 Z.E. 40
  • Renault ZOE Q90 Z.E. 40
  • Renault ZOE R240 22 kWh
  • Renault ZOE Q210 22 kWh

What are the known weak spots of the ZOE?

  • Leased battery: the monthly fee and new contract put buyers off
  • 22 kWh versions (2013–2016): limited range, especially after battery degradation
  • Phase 1: charging faults on some charge points with poor earthing
  • No CCS fast charging on Phase 1 or on Phase 2 cars without that option
  • A 12V battery that drains, so the car will not start

What does a buyer check on a used ZOE?

  • Leased or owned battery: ask a Renault dealer to confirm it from the VIN
  • SoH report from a dealer or an independent battery test
  • Charging flap: CCS fitted and Type 2 cable included
  • Test charging during the viewing
  • Open recalls via the registration check

How do you sell your ZOE for the best price?

  1. Buy out a leased battery if that is possible and makes financial sense; it widens the pool of buyers considerably
  2. Put battery size, SoH and CCS in the ad title
  3. Fully charge the car before the test drive and show the range on the display
  4. Point out the low road tax: in 2026 an EV pays 70% of the rate

FAQ about the Renault ZOE

Can I sell a ZOE with a leased battery?

Yes, but the buyer must take out their own battery rental contract with Mobilize Financial Services (Renault) and will be assessed for it. Only once that is arranged can the car be transferred and your contract end. Also ask whether buying out the battery is possible: a ZOE with an owned battery appeals to far more buyers and sells faster.

How do I get my ZOE's battery tested?

At a Renault dealer or an independent specialist who issues an SoH report. The report shows how much capacity the battery has left compared with new. Buyers trust a written report more than the range on the display, which depends on driving style and temperature. Read how it works in our guide to EV batteries.

Can a buyer get a subsidy on a used ZOE?

Not yet. The SEPP subsidy for used EVs has closed. Its successor, the OGEA (€4,000, or €6,000 if you scrap a Euro 0–4 car you own), has been announced but is not open as of October 2026. It is meant for used EVs with a list price of €12,000 to €60,000. The final conditions have yet to be published.
