What should you know when selling a Volvo?

In the Netherlands, Volvo stands for safety, comfort and estates. The V60 is the classic Volvo estate, the V40 a compact premium car no longer made, and the XC40 and XC60 are the popular SUVs, also as plug-in hybrids (Recharge) and the XC40 also as an EV. Many young Volvos come off lease, often as plug-ins with full dealer history.

Buyers are families, caravan owners and business drivers who value comfortable seats and lots of safety systems. When selling, the engine (T petrol, D diesel or Recharge plug-in), trim (Momentum, Inscription, R-Design, Plus, Ultimate), a tow bar and the service history count. With plug-ins, buyers ask about the battery and charging cable, and about road tax, which since 2026 is based on the full weight. Start with a free valuation.

How well does a Volvo hold its value?

Volvos hold their value well, especially the XC40 and XC60. Large plug-ins have lost value a little faster since road tax rose in 2026.

FAQ about selling a Volvo

Is a Volvo with a tow bar worth more?

Yes, usually. Many Volvo buyers tow a caravan, trailer or horsebox. A factory-fitted or neatly installed tow bar makes the car more attractive to them.

What does Recharge mean at Volvo?

Recharge is Volvo’s name for its plug-in hybrids (such as the T5 and T6 Recharge) and electric cars. A plug-in needs charging to drive economically.

Can an old Volvo diesel enter low-emission zones?

Only with Euro 5 or higher in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem. Older D engines from before around 2010 may be Euro 4. Check with the low-emission zone check.

Should I sell an ex-lease Volvo privately or through an auction?

Private usually nets the most but takes more time. An auction with dealers and private buyers quickly gives several bids. Compare with the net proceeds tool.
