Buying safely: how to avoid problems
- Seller: never share the tenaamstellingscode (registration code) before the payment has arrived. Buyer: only pay once you have seen the car, the registration card and the full code together, and do the transfer together (€13.10 in 2026, online with the RDW or at a licence plate counter).
- Since 1 January 2026 dealers may not accept cash payments of €3,000 or more, not even split into parts. Between private persons it is still allowed.
- Preferably pay by instant bank transfer. Keys and papers change hands only once the money is visibly in the account.
- Be wary of a price far below the market, time pressure, or a seller who only wants to chat or won’t show the car.
Have the car inspected before you buy
According to the ANWB a pre-purchase inspection costs €150 to €350. If the seller refuses an inspection, keep looking.
