Our review of the Volkswagen Tiguan

Compiled with the help of AI from the sources listed; facts checked automatically. We have not driven this car.

The Volkswagen Tiguan costs from € 47,990 drive-away (price list of 28 July 2026, model year 2027) and comes as a 131 hp 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid or a 1.5 eHybrid plug-in hybrid with 204 or 272 hp. The eTSI uses 5.8 l/100 km on the WLTP cycle; the eHybrid is rated at 1.4 to 1.6 l/100 km and 118 to 126 km electric range (WLTP). It is a mid-size SUV with a 652-litre boot in the eTSI and 490 litres in the eHybrid.

According to ANWB the Tiguan is a roomy and comfortable mid-size SUV, and every version is electrified. ANWB gave the 1.5 eTSI Life Edition it tested (2024) an ANWB Score of 7.5 and praised its comfort and space, but found the purchase price high for the partly basic materials. Note that the tested eTSI had 150 hp and is not on the current price list, and no test of the eHybrid was found.

Buy it if…

  • You want a roomy mid-size SUV with a 652-litre boot (eTSI) and a sliding rear bench; ANWB found more rear and boot space than in the Mazda CX-5.
  • You can charge and mostly drive short trips: the eHybrid is rated at 118 to 126 km electric range (WLTP) and charges at 11 kW AC.
  • You tow: the eHybrid 150 kW may tow 1,800 kg braked, the 200 kW version 2,000 kg.

Skip it if…

  • A low purchase price matters most to you: ANWB called the price high relative to the partly basic materials.
  • You need a big boot in the plug-in hybrid: it has 490 litres instead of 652.
  • You want a fully electric car: the Tiguan is offered only as a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid.

Best pick

Tiguan 1.5 eHybrid 150 kW Life: At € 49,990 (price list of 28 July 2026) the Tiguan 1.5 eHybrid 150 kW Life is the cheapest plug-in hybrid on that list: 204 hp, 0-100 km/h in 8.2 s, 125 km electric range (WLTP) and 26 minutes for a 10-80% DC charge. That is € 2,000 more than the entry-level Trend with 131 hp and 10.2 s.

Pros

  • Very comfortable, well-shaped front seats (ANWB, Autozine).
  • Safe and comfortable chassis; the optional DCC Pro dampers let the driver shift the setup towards comfort or sport (ANWB, Autozine).
  • Spacious, flexible interior with a sliding rear bench and a 652-litre boot in the eTSI; more rear and boot space than a Mazda CX-5 in ANWB's comparison test.
  • Many driver-assistance systems are standard; ANWB rated the optional LED lighting very good.
  • Every version is electrified; the plug-in hybrid is rated at 118 to 126 km electric range on the price list.
  • Euro NCAP awards five stars (2024).

Cons

  • According to ANWB the purchase price is high relative to the partly basic interior materials.
  • ANWB found the 1.5 petrol mild-hybrid engine somewhat strained and unrefined in the roughly 1,600 kg SUV (tested version: 150 hp).
  • Real-world fuel use of the mild hybrid was moderate: ANWB measured 6.7 l/100 km, Autozine noted 8.3 l/100 km at the pump.
  • ANWB says the touchscreen-heavy controls are unnecessarily fiddly.
  • Autozine's test car showed sensor fault warnings almost daily and was judged average in most respects.

Space and dimensions

The Tiguan is 4,539 mm long, 1,842 mm wide (R-Line 1,859 mm) and 1,658 mm high, with a 2,679 mm wheelbase. The boot holds 652 litres with and 1,650 litres without the second row; in the eHybrid that is 490 and 1,486 litres. ANWB found rear and boot space larger than in the Mazda CX-5.

Plug-in hybrid and charging

The eHybrid is rated at 118 to 126 km electric range on the WLTP cycle, depending on version, and 1.4 to 1.6 l/100 km. It charges at 11 kW on AC and up to 40 kW on DC; 10 to 80% takes 26 minutes according to Volkswagen. The battery has a nominal capacity of 20 kWh.
