WLTP

Updated All terms from A to Z

WLTP is the test method used to measure the fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and range of new cars. It replaced the older NEDC method, which gave lower and less realistic figures. The Belastingdienst has used WLTP emissions for BPM (the Dutch registration tax) since 1 July 2020.

Why it matters when buying or selling

  • EV range: the WLTP range is a test figure. In real-world driving you often get less, especially in winter and on the motorway. With a used EV, also ask about the battery health (SoH).
  • Comparing consumption: only compare WLTP figures with WLTP figures. An older car with an NEDC figure looks more economical on paper than it really is.
  • Imported cars: for a car first registered before 1 July 2020, you may calculate the rest-BPM using the NEDC tables or WLTP. If the car has both values, you choose (Belastingdienst).
  • Company car tax: the bijtelling percentage depends on whether CO2 emissions are zero or higher.
