With an aankoopkeuring (pre-purchase inspection), an independent inspector checks a used car before you buy it. The inspector looks at things like the engine, brakes, chassis, damage and rust, and records the findings in a report. An aankoopkeuring is not an APK (the Dutch MOT): the APK only checks whether a car meets the legal requirements for the road.

- Buyer: in a private sale, you have to prove a defect already existed. An inspection report helps with that and gives you arguments to negotiate.
- Seller: cooperate with an inspection. The ANWB advises buyers to keep looking if a seller refuses one.
