Allrisk, also called volledig casco (fully comprehensive), covers everything limited comprehensive covers, plus damage to your own car that you cause yourself. Think of hitting a pole, leaving the road or a collision that is your fault. According to the ANWB, vandalism is covered too. Allrisk is never mandatory; only third-party (WA) cover is required by law.
Why it matters when buying or selling
- Age and value: the newer and more valuable the car, the sooner allrisk is worth it (ANWB). For an older car with a low market value, the higher premium often outweighs what you would receive after a claim.
- No-claims years: claiming for at-fault damage usually costs you claim-free years and therefore no-claims discount. For small damage, paying yourself can work out cheaper.
- Excess: many allrisk policies have an excess (eigen risico) per claim. Check how high it is.
- Know the cost upfront: get a quote before you buy. The premium depends on things like the car, where you live and your claim-free years.
Add the premium to your monthly car costs.
