Median per year. New price: what the car cost new in the Netherlands, the RDW catalogue price (incl. VAT, BPM and factory options, without delivery costs). For cars imported used: the Dutch catalogue price of that version. Value kept: asking price divided by the car’s own new price. Drop per year: value kept against the next newer year; a plus means that year asks relatively more. Older cars have more miles, which is part of the drop. * Fewer than 5 cars: indicative only. Asking prices, not sale prices.

Who buys a used Kia Sportage?

In the Netherlands, the Sportage is the Kia for families and caravanners. It has a high seating position, a roomy rear bench and a useful towing capacity, and it comes with a 7-year factory warranty. Buyers are families with young children, people over fifty who want easy access and campers looking for a reliable tow car. A Sportage IV with the 1.6 T-GDi and all-wheel drive, or a Sportage V hybrid, are the versions most in demand.

Trim, drivetrain and tow bar drive the price. A GT-Line or ExecutiveLine with leather, panoramic roof and 360-degree camera sits clearly above a ComfortLine, and a tow bar makes a Sportage more attractive to caravanners. On a Sportage V, the remaining warranty is a strong argument, because the factory warranty passes to the next owner as long as the conditions have been met. Older Euro 4 Sportage II diesels are barred from the milieuzones (low-emission zones) in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem: check with the low-emission zone check and get a valuation by registration number.

Which Sportage generations are there?

Which Sportage generations are there?
GenerationWhat to know
Sportage I1995–2004A proper off-roader with a ladder chassis; now mainly an enthusiast or export car.
Sportage II (KM)2004–2010Shares its engineering with the Hyundai Tucson; the 2.0 CRDi is often Euro 4 and barred from the big low-emission zones.
Sportage III (SL)2010–2015The modern design that put Kia on the map, with 1.6 GDI, 2.0 and 1.7 CRDi engines.
Sportage IV (QL)2016–2021Lots of 1.6 GDI and 1.6 T-GDi with all-wheel drive and DCT; mild-hybrid diesels from 2018.
Sportage V (NQ5)2022–presentFull hybrid and plug-in hybrid with the 1.6 T-GDi, a wide curved screen and lots of space.

Which Sportage versions are popular?

These are the versions buyers search for most. Name the exact version in your ad.

  • Kia Sportage 1.6 GDI ComfortLine
  • Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDi 4WD
  • Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDi Hybrid
  • Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDi Plug-in Hybrid
  • Kia Sportage 1.7 CRDi
  • Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDi

What are the known weak spots of the Sportage?

  • Seven-speed DCT on the 1.6 T-GDi: check for smooth shifts, especially after lots of towing
  • All-wheel drive: listen for noises on tight turns and ask about drivetrain servicing
  • Sportage II and III diesels: EGR valve, particulate filter and emission class
  • Tow bar: check the electrical socket and wear after lots of caravan trips
  • Plug-in hybrid: electric range and charging cable

What does a buyer check on a used Sportage?

  • Clutch or DCT on cars that have done a lot of towing
  • Brakes and tyres, as it is a heavy car
  • Warranty and service history
  • Operation of the 360-degree camera and power tailgate
  • Emission class on older diesels

How do you sell your Sportage for the best price?

  1. State the towing capacity and tow bar clearly: caravanners search for exactly that
  2. A Sportage with a tow bar often sells best in the run-up to camping season
  3. Include the warranty and service history
  4. Show a battery report for a hybrid or plug-in

FAQ about the Kia Sportage

Is a Sportage a good tow car for a caravan?

Yes, many versions are suitable, but the maximum towing weight differs by engine and drivetrain. The braked towing capacity is registered with the RDW against your registration number; look it up with the registration check and put it in your ad. All-wheel-drive 1.6 T-GDi and diesel versions are most sought after by caravanners.

Does my Sportage's warranty transfer to the buyer?

Yes. The factory warranty passes to the next owner as long as the conditions have been met, mainly servicing to Kia's schedule. The warranty runs for 7 years or 150,000 km, so a 2022 Sportage V is covered into 2029. Ask a Kia dealer for the exact end date from the VIN and mention it in your ad.

Can my Sportage diesel still enter low-emission zones?

Only if it is Euro 5 or newer. The Sportage II 2.0 CRDi (2004–2010) is often Euro 4 and then may not enter Amsterdam, Utrecht or Arnhem; The Hague bars Euro 3 and older. The fine is €130. A Sportage III or IV diesel is Euro 5 or 6. Check with the low-emission zone check.
