The A1 is the smallest Audi: a premium city car for people who find a Polo too ordinary. The second generation (from 2018) is five-door only and has a fully digital dashboard. Buyers are young urbanites, first-time buyers with a bigger budget and older drivers after a small but upmarket car. The A1 shares technology with the Volkswagen Polo, so servicing is easy to arrange.
What sets the price: generation, engine, automatic and trim. A 30 TFSI with S tronic and S line fetches the most; the A1 citycarver (raised, with plastic arch trims) has its own buyers. Diesels are rare and less popular. Use the net proceeds tool to see whether trading in or selling privately nets you more.
| Generation | Years | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A1 (8X)2010–2018 | 2010–2018 | As three-door and Sportback; the 1.0 TFSI arrived in 2015. |
| A1 Sportback (GB)2018–present | 2018–present | Five-door and petrol only, also as the raised citycarver. |

Partly, technically. The A1 sits on the same platform as the Polo of the same period and shares engines and gearboxes. Interior, finish and equipment are more upmarket.
Fairly well. Small premium cars are popular with city dwellers. Well-equipped examples with S tronic lose less value than basic versions.
A raised A1 Sportback with more ground clearance, plastic wheel-arch trims and its own front. Mechanicals and space match the regular A1.
