Median per year. New price: what the car cost new in the Netherlands, the RDW catalogue price (incl. VAT, BPM and factory options, without delivery costs). For cars imported used: the Dutch catalogue price of that version. Value kept: asking price divided by the car’s own new price. Drop per year: value kept against the next newer year; a plus means that year asks relatively more. Older cars have more miles, which is part of the drop. * Fewer than 5 cars: indicative only. Asking prices, not sale prices.
In the Netherlands, the 5 Series is first and foremost a lease car for directors and sales reps who cover big distances. As a result, it depreciates steeply in the early years, which is the opportunity for the second owner: business owners, families with a Touring and caravanners who want a comfortable 530d as a tow car. A well-kept F11 520d Touring or G30 530e is a familiar sight on the used market.
Packages largely set the price. M Sport, comfort seats, Driving Assistant Professional, Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins audio, a head-up display and a panoramic roof make a 5 Series clearly more appealing. On an F10 520d up to about 2014, buyers ask about the N47 chain; on an F11 Touring about the rear air suspension, which can start leaking. On a 530e, battery condition counts, and the road tax discount for plug-ins ended in 2026. The electric i5 pays 70% of the normal MRB (road tax) rate in 2026. Let buyers arrange a pre-purchase inspection and work out your valuation first.
| Generation | Years | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| E12 tot E341972–1996 | 1972–1996 | Classics; condition and history set the value. |
| E391995–2003 | 1995–2003 | Popular modern classic with strong six-cylinders; rust and suspension condition set the price. |
| E60/E612003–2010 | 2003–2010 | Lots of electronics; diesels are often Euro 4, so check low-emission zones. |
| F10/F112010–2017 | 2010–2017 | Popular ex-lease car, especially as a 520d Touring; the Touring has rear air suspension. |
| G30/G312017–2023 | 2017–2023 | The 530e and 520d dominate supply; extensive driver assistance. |
| G60/G612023–present | 2023–present | Also fully electric as the i5; the Touring arrived in 2024. |

Mainly because of the high new price and the large supply of ex-lease cars. Many 5 Series reach the market at the same time after three to five years, with high mileages. After that, depreciation levels off. For you as a seller, it means equipment, history and condition decide whether your car stands out from the average.
Yes, for buyers who charge at home and mostly make short trips. Since 2026 a plug-in pays the full MRB road tax rate. A 530e is heavy, so road tax is not low; let buyers work it out themselves with the road tax calculator. Fully charge the car before viewings and show how far it goes on electricity.
Have it repaired or disclose it honestly. A buyer will often spot it from a car that sits low at the back. In a private sale you may not conceal known defects. A repair with an invoice makes the car easier to sell; if you disclose it instead, the buyer will factor the repair into their offer.
