Who buys a used Citroën Berlingo?

The Berlingo leads two lives in the Netherlands. As a van on a grijs kenteken (commercial grey plate), it is a staple for freelancers, installers and painters. As a passenger car, once called the Multispace, it is loved by families, dog owners and wheelchair users for its sliding doors, high roof and huge load space. The third generation (2018–) shares everything with the Peugeot Rifter, Opel Combo and Toyota Proace City, in a short M and a long XL version.

With a Berlingo, practicality counts for more than luxury: a towbar, sliding doors on both sides, a lined load area and a seven-seat XL are all worth money. With diesels, buyers check the emissions class. A passenger Berlingo with a Euro 4 diesel is barred from Amsterdam, Utrecht and Arnhem. Vans also face zero-emission zones in more than twenty cities, which Euro 5 vans may enter only until 31 December 2026. So always run a low-emission zone check. A van often sells faster through a dealer bid than privately.

Which Berlingo generations are there?

Which Berlingo generations are there?
GenerationWhat to know
Berlingo (Mk1)1996–2008The original van and Multispace passenger version; mostly diesels, nearly all of them Euro 4 or lower.
Berlingo (Mk2)2008–2018Bigger, with sliding doors on both sides; the 1.6 HDi and later the BlueHDi were the best sellers.
Berlingo (Mk3)2018–presentShared with the Peugeot Rifter/Partner, Opel Combo and Toyota Proace City, in two lengths (M and XL) and from 2021 also as the ë-Berlingo.

Which Berlingo versions are popular?

These are the versions buyers search for most. Name the exact version in your ad.

  • Citroën Berlingo 1.6 HDi 75 Club (bestel)
  • Citroën Berlingo 1.6 BlueHDi 100 Multispace
  • Citroën Berlingo 1.2 PureTech 110 Feel M
  • Citroën Berlingo 1.5 BlueHDi 100 Club M (bestel)
  • Citroën Berlingo ë-Berlingo M

What are the known weak spots of the Berlingo?

  • 1.6 HDi (Mk2): leaking copper washers under the injectors and turbo damage from a clogged oil feed
  • Diesels with the FAP particulate filter: the additive tank must be topped up on time
  • BlueHDi (late Mk2 and Mk3): faults in the AdBlue system
  • 1.2 PureTech (Mk3 petrol): timing belt running in oil
  • Sliding doors: worn runners and locks after heavy use
  • Rear suspension and dampers on vans that were often driven fully loaded

What does a buyer check on a used Berlingo?

  • Emissions class and access to low-emission and zero-emission zones by licence plate
  • Load area: damage, lining, tie-down points and both sliding doors working
  • Smoke on a cold start and no AdBlue or engine warning
  • Towbar: registered on the plate and wiring that works
  • For a wheelchair conversion: the conversion paperwork
  • On an ë-Berlingo: a state-of-health (SoH) report and charging cables

How do you sell your Berlingo for the best price?

  1. If you sell the van from your business, state whether the price includes or excludes VAT (BTW); business buyers calculate with it straight away
  2. Have company lettering removed; clean sides widen interest from private buyers and other businesses
  3. On a seven-seat XL or a passenger car with a towbar, put those photos first; families with a caravan or trailer search for them
  4. An older Euro 4 or Euro 5 diesel has a smaller buyer pool, so a dealer bid through an auction is often faster than a private sale

FAQ about the Citroën Berlingo

Can my Berlingo van still enter zero-emission zones after 2026?

Not if it is a Euro 5 diesel. Euro 5 vans may enter the zero-emission zones in more than twenty cities only until 31 December 2026, and not after that. Newer vans follow other transition rules, so check your plate on milieuzones.nl. If you are selling to a business owner who works in the city, ideally do it before that date.

Can I sell my grey-plate Berlingo van to a private buyer?

Yes, anyone may buy a grey-plate van and register it in their name. In practice, business owners are the largest buyer group. Private buyers mainly look at price and whether the van may enter low-emission zones. So state the emissions class and whether the price includes or excludes VAT.

Which passenger Berlingo is most in demand?

The third generation (2018–) with the 1.2 PureTech or 1.5 BlueHDi and sliding doors on both sides. The long seven-seat XL is popular with large families. Older Multispace diesels are cheap, but because of low-emission zones and their age, the buyer pool is smaller.
