Who buys a used Citroën C3?

The C3 is Citroën's comfortable small car and competes on the used market with the Peugeot 208, Renault Clio and Opel Corsa. Buyers are often older drivers and small families who value soft suspension, a high seating position and a low price over sportiness. The third generation (2016–2024), recognisable by its Airbump side panels, is the most sought after. It shares its engines with the 208 but usually costs less second-hand.

The engine sets the price. Almost every C3 from 2013 onwards has a 1.2 PureTech, and buyers ask about the timing belt and oil consumption. If you can show invoices for a belt check or replacement, most of the room for haggling disappears. Diesels are rare, and an older HDi may fall foul of low-emission zone rules. Versions with Apple CarPlay, parking sensors and air conditioning sell faster. The new C3 (2024–) and the electric ë-C3 are still scarce second-hand; buyers mainly ask about battery health.

Which C3 generations are there?

Which C3 generations are there?
GenerationWhat to know
C3 (Mk1)2002–2009Tall, rounded city car with 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 petrol engines and HDi diesels that are mostly Euro 3 or 4.
C3 (Mk2)2009–2016Known for the Zenith windscreen that stretches up over your head; from 2012 also with 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines.
C3 (Mk3)2016–2024With Airbump panels on the sides; the 1.2 PureTech is by far the most common engine, with a facelift in 2020.

Which C3 versions are popular?

These are the versions buyers search for most. Name the exact version in your ad.

  • Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech 82 Feel
  • Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech 110 Shine
  • Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech 83 C-Series
  • Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech Selection
  • Citroën C3 ë-C3 You

What are the known weak spots of the C3?

  • 1.2 PureTech: the timing belt runs in oil and can wear early; loose particles can affect oil flow and brake assistance (recall for 2017–2018 cars)
  • Higher oil consumption on some 1.2 PureTech engines
  • BlueHDi diesels: faults in the AdBlue system
  • Mk2 with the 1.4 or 1.6 VTi: rattling timing chain on a cold start
  • Mk3: faded Airbump panels and a slow-responding infotainment screen

What does a buyer check on a used C3?

  • Invoices for a belt check or replacement (dealers advise a check at around 100,000 km or 6 years)
  • Recall status with the RDW by licence plate
  • Oil level and blue smoke under acceleration
  • Brake pedal: not hard or heavy with the engine running
  • On diesels: emissions class and no AdBlue warning on the dashboard

How do you sell your C3 for the best price?

  1. Have the belt measured as you approach 100,000 km; a report is your strongest selling point
  2. State the exact trim (Feel, Shine, C-Series), because kit such as CarPlay and sensors makes a real difference on a C3
  3. A stamped service book appeals to the often older C3 buyer, who values a dealer history
  4. If the belt history is unknown, focus on dealer bids through an auction: a trader prices in the risk, but you are not stuck with a hesitant private buyer

FAQ about the Citroën C3

Is a C3 with the 1.2 PureTech a bad buy?

No, not necessarily. Many run without trouble as long as the belt was checked on time and the right oil was used. The risk lies in an unknown history. That is why buyers pay clearly more for a C3 with invoices for a belt check or replacement and a completed recall.

What is the difference between the C3 and the C3 Aircross?

The C3 is a hatchback; the C3 Aircross is a taller crossover with more interior space. They share engines, including the 1.2 PureTech, but are separate models with their own price levels. A valuation by licence plate on Sell Your Car recognises the correct model automatically.

Is the electric ë-C3 available second-hand yet?

Yes, but only in small numbers, since it arrived in 2024. Buyers look at battery state of health (SoH) and charging speed. An EV pays 70% of the normal road tax in 2026. The announced OGEA subsidy for used EVs is not open yet; read more.
