Who buys a used Citroën C4?

The C4 comes in three very different generations, and that shows on the used market. The second generation (2010–2018) is a solid, understated family hatchback that often started as a company car and now reaches private buyers with high mileage. The current C4 (2020–) is a tall hatchback with crossover touches and one of the most comfortable cars in its class, available with petrol, diesel, a 48V hybrid or as the electric ë-C4. Buyers are families and commuters who want space and comfort without paying SUV prices.

The C4 loses quite a lot of value in its first years, partly because new ones are heavily discounted. That makes its price sensitive to detail. On petrol models it is all about the 1.2 PureTech and its belt history; on the ë-C4 it is battery health and battery size. A smooth EAT8 automatic is popular, the older ETG6 automated manual less so. If you are offered a trade-in bonus on a new car, ask for the trade-in price separately from the discount and compare it with an auction and a private sale.

Which C4 generations are there?

Which C4 generations are there?
GenerationWhat to know
C4 (Mk1)2004–2010Five-door hatchback and three-door Coupé with a fixed-hub steering wheel; HDi diesels from this period are mostly Euro 4.
C4 (Mk2)2010–2018Calmer styling, with the 1.6 VTi/THP and later the 1.2 PureTech, plus frugal e-HDi diesels with the ETG6 automated manual.
C4 (Mk3)2020–presentTall hatchback with crossover touches, also as the electric ë-C4 (50 or 54 kWh), a 48V hybrid and the C4 X saloon.

Which C4 versions are popular?

These are the versions buyers search for most. Name the exact version in your ad.

  • Citroën C4 1.2 PureTech 130 Feel
  • Citroën C4 1.2 PureTech 130 Shine EAT8
  • Citroën C4 ë-C4 50 kWh Feel
  • Citroën C4 1.6 e-HDi Business
  • Citroën C4 1.2 PureTech 130 Business

What are the known weak spots of the C4?

  • 1.2 PureTech (Mk2 from 2014 and Mk3): timing belt in oil and sometimes high oil consumption
  • Mk2 e-HDi with the ETG6 automated manual: jerky shifts and clutch wear
  • 1.6 HDi (Mk1/Mk2): leaking injector seals and a particulate filter that needs additive
  • 1.6 THP and VTi (Mk2): stretching timing chain and oil consumption
  • BlueHDi diesels: faults in the AdBlue system

What does a buyer check on a used C4?

  • Belt history and recalls (RDW) on a PureTech
  • On an ë-C4: a recent state-of-health (SoH) report and the battery size (50 or 54 kWh)
  • Automatic gearbox behaviour: an EAT8 should shift smoothly
  • Dashboard warnings for AdBlue, the particulate filter or engine faults
  • Service history on high-mileage ex-company Mk2 cars

How do you sell your C4 for the best price?

  1. On a high-mileage Mk2, focus on a complete service history; these buyers care about price and reliability, not options
  2. Sell an ë-C4 with a recent battery report and charging-speed details, and mention the lower road tax for EVs (30% discount in 2026)
  3. When trading in, ask for the trade-in price separately from the discount on your new car so you can compare it fairly

FAQ about the Citroën C4

Why is a used C4 so cheap?

Mainly because of depreciation in the first years: new C4s were often sold at big discounts, which pushes down used prices. Technically the car is no worse than its rivals. For you as a seller, it means service history and equipment carry a lot of weight; that is how you make your C4 stand out from the rest.

Is the C4 Cactus the same model as the C4?

No. The C4 Cactus (2014–2020) is a separate model with Airbump panels and its own price level, although it shares engines with the C4, including the 1.2 PureTech. A valuation by licence plate recognises the correct model automatically, so you don't need to pick it yourself.

How do I get a good price for an ë-C4?

With a recent battery report. Used EV buyers want to know how much capacity is left (SoH). Also state the battery size, charging power and which cables are included. In 2026, EV drivers pay 70% of the normal road tax, and a used-EV subsidy (OGEA) has been announced but is not open yet.
